Historic Ellicott City's holiday season has two weekend dates and one Friday night. The weekend dates come with a free trolley running every 10 to 15 minutes. The Friday is the 48th Midnight Madness and Tree Lighting on Dec. 4, and it falls outside the trolley's posted schedule. At the bottom of Main Street, where Parking Lot B used to take some of the overflow, there is now a construction site for the tunnel meant to carry floodwater away from town.
December on Main Street now depends on which day of the week you go, and the biggest night of the season falls on the day with the fewest ways to get there.
Two weekend dates and one Friday
| Date | Event | OEC Trolley | Lot B |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturday, Nov. 28, 1 p.m. | Small Business Saturday on Main Street | Regular weekend service, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. | Closed |
| Friday, Dec. 4, 6 p.m. to midnight | 48th Midnight Madness and Tree Lighting | Fridays are not on the regular schedule | Closed |
| Sunday, Dec. 6, 2 to 5 p.m. | Gift of Art reception, Artists' Gallery | Regular weekend service, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. | Closed |
The Ellicott City Partnership calendar lists Small Business Saturday for Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. Visit Howard County lists Midnight Madness for Dec. 4 from 6 p.m. to midnight, with Santa, shopping, sidewalk sales, restaurants and seasonal specials. The trolley details come from Howard County's OEC Trolley page.
Why the lowest lot is closed
Lot B sits on the west bank of the Patapsco River, at the base of Main Street. Howard County's Department of Public Works set its closure for 6 a.m. on a Monday, April 28, so crews could build the outfall structure for the Ellicott City Safe and Sound Plan's North Tunnel, just north of the lot. The county expects the work to finish by mid-2027, weather permitting, and plans to reopen the lot then. The county's project page says outfall construction began in May 2025 and that Lot B is closed to the public while it continues.
The tunnel is the main piece of the flood plan. According to the county's flood mitigation project page, it will run 18 feet in diameter underground and carry floodwater from the West End of Ellicott City to the Patapsco, pulling water off the western part of town before it reaches Main Street. Work began in June 2024 near Papillon Drive, where the county is building the mining shaft for the tunnel boring machine and a drop shaft for floodwater. Construction at the river outfall began in May 2025. The county expects substantial completion in fall 2027.
So this is the second holiday season with Lot B closed. The outfall crews work Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., which means the site is quiet by the time Midnight Madness starts at 6 p.m. The parking is still gone, though.
The county's closure notice included one change to offset it: lifting the two-hour parking limits on Maryland Avenue until the project is finished. The same notice said Lot B's directional signs around lower Main Street would be removed for the duration. Visit Howard County's driving directions page says parking is not allowed on Main Street itself and points visitors to extra parking at the Circuit Court and Roger Carter Center lots. The same page still lists all six lettered lots, A through F, as available. Lot B is one of them, and it is not available.
Saturday works with the trolley
Small Business Saturday fits the weekend system. The OEC Trolley is free and runs Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a vehicle every 10 to 15 minutes. On special-event weekends, the county says the route can extend to the Circuit Courthouse parking lot. A 1 p.m. start on Nov. 28 falls well inside those hours, so you can park on the edge of town and ride in.
Saturday is also the easiest day to visit the newest shop on Main Street. The Capital Gazette reported on Oct. 6 that Victorian Flower Child is a new Main Street clothing boutique with vintage and locally sourced pieces. This is its first holiday season on the street.
Friday asks more of you
Midnight Madness is the biggest night of the season and the hardest one to get to. It runs on Friday, Dec. 4, from 6 p.m. to midnight, and the tree lighting includes Santa. Artists' Gallery calls it the 48th annual Midnight Madness and Tree Lighting and lists its own doors as open from 6 to 10 p.m. that night. The Ellicott City Partnership, which ran the 47th edition in 2025, has the Dec. 4 date on its 2026 calendar.
The trolley's posted service covers Saturdays and Sundays only. Put that together with the closed riverside lot and a Friday night crowd, and the real question for Dec. 4 is where to park before you think about where to shop.
Two new places on Main Street change how the night can go.
Vesper, 8210 Main St. The Baltimore Business Journal reported that this restaurant and cocktail bar opened in July in the space that had held Revel & Main, which closed in 2023. It serves seasonal cocktails, wine and a menu from chef Rachel Bindel. The Ellicott City Partnership named Vesper at Pike & Main its August 2026 merchant of the month. It's at the address 8210 Main St., right on the street where the evening happens.
Hot Garbage Pizza, 8069 Tiber Alley. Baltimore Fishbowl reported the Tiber Alley address in August, and Columbia Scoop reported in its Oct. 22 issue that the restaurant was open. Its posted hours are Wednesday and Thursday 4 to 9 p.m. and Friday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., closed Monday and Tuesday. On Midnight Madness night, that means it closes at 9 p.m. while the event runs three more hours. Plan to eat there early, then shop.
A Friday plan that fits these limits:
- Arrive close to 6 p.m. so you're there for the tree lighting and Santa while parking is still open.
- Skip the drive down to the river. Lot B is closed for the outfall work.
- Check Maryland Avenue, where the county said it would lift the two-hour limit during construction, or the Circuit Court and Roger Carter Center lots.
- Get to Hot Garbage Pizza before 9 p.m. The event itself runs until midnight.
Sunday brings the trolley back
Two days after Midnight Madness, the weekend schedule returns. Artists' Gallery at 8197 Main St. holds the reception for its Gift of Art show on Sunday, Dec. 6, from 2 to 5 p.m. That fits within the trolley's 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday service. If Friday felt too crowded for browsing, the show runs through Jan. 10, 2027, so there are several more weekends to see it. Hot Garbage Pizza is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. that Sunday too.
All three dates sit on top of a construction timeline that goes well past this season. The county expects Lot B back around mid-2027 and the full North Tunnel substantially complete in fall 2027. For this season, the weekend events have the trolley and Midnight Madness has Maryland Avenue.
The North Tunnel is the biggest public project in Historic Ellicott City right now, and its timeline matters to homeowners nearby as much as to holiday shoppers.
